Die Geschichte erzählt von dem Architekten Sam Baldwin, der seine wahre Liebe durch den Tod seiner Frau verloren hat, und von Annie Reed, die sie noch nicht gefunden hat. Sam lebt in Seattle, Annie in Baltimore. An einem Weihnachtsabend hört Annie einen Jungen im Radio, der erzählt, wie sehr er seine Mutter vermisst und wie sehr sein Vater unter dem Verlust seiner Frau leidet. Sam wird ans Telefon gebeten und Annie findet ihn sofort sympathisch.
Obwohl Annie kurz davor steht, ihren Verlobten Walter zu heiraten, entscheidet sie sich, nach Seattle zu fliegen und mehr über Sam und seinen Sohn Jonah herauszufinden. Sie trifft den Mann, wagt aber nicht, ihm zu sagen, wer sie ist.
Der Sohn von Sam fliegt nach New York City, wo Annie und ihr Verlobter sich aufhalten. Er wartet dort auf der Aussichtsplattform des Empire State Building auf die Frau. Sein Vater kommt ihm nach und trifft Annie auf der Aussichtsplattform.
