Vanessa Lee Carlton [born August 16th 1980 in Milford, Pennsylvania] is an American pop singer, songwriter, and pianist best known for the single 'A Thousand Miles' from her debut album, Be Not Nobody , which was certified platinum in the U.S. The commercial failure of Carlton's second album, Harmonium , led her to part company from her record label A and M, though she still holds a dedicated fanbase. Her third album, 'Heroes And Thieves', was released in October 2007 on Irv Gotti's record label The Inc.
'Heroes And Thieves' is the third album from the three time Grammy nominated artist, whose hits include 'A Thousand Miles', 'Ordinary Day' and 'White Houses'. The album features the hit single 'Nolita Fairytale', and is produced by Vanessa Carlton, Stephan Jenkins [Third Eye Blind], Irv Gotti and Linda Perry. Stevie Nicks featured on 'The One'. According to Carlton, the album is "the best patch of songs I've ever written". She described it as "pretty uplifting" and as having "a lot of layers ... [There are] very complex arrangements but everything just makes me feel good and not in a simplistic way". She also called it her most honest album, and only one of hers that she considers "a body of work" as opposed to a collection of songs. "I think that shows", she said. "It really does feel like a real album". Carlton says that the concept of the album is "about personal evolution and finding joy through hardships. Every song is like a different chapter in a book". Carlton said the song 'Nolita Fairytale' is about her life in Nolita [a neighbourhood of New York City] and, in her words, "the series of revelations I have had over the past few years". She called the song 'Heroes And Thieves' a song about assessing, to put it in a dramatic way, the Heroes and Thieves in your life", it is about her personal evolution, and her deciding how she wants to lead her life and the people with whom she wants to share it.
Carlton shot the music video for 'Nolita Fairytale' in the area of Lafayette Street and Bond Street in Nolita on July 28th 2007. It features a yellow taxi smashing into a grand piano, a reference to her first video 'A Thousand Miles'.
