Assorted comments:

This episode, directed by trek veteran Joseph Pevney, was written by Boris Sobelman (his only trek contribution), after a story treatment from Gene Roddenberry himself. The first draft of this script featured a very human subplot to offset the nonhuman behavior of Landru and the Lawgivers. Sociologist Luster (changed to Lindstrom in the final draft) falls in love with Reger's daughter, Tula. Although Lindstrom's protest about Tula's fate in "The Red Hour" was left in, the attraction between the two was edited out.

Captain Kirk's concerns for the rights of the individual over those of the machine may have been partially fostered by his experiences in "Court-Martial", and have fostered some debate as to whether his anti-machine acts ever constitute violations of the Prime Directive. This issue is clouded because Kirk usually induces the machines to destroy THEMSELVES, as in this episode. The dialogue usually sounds something like "... You have failed to fulfill your prime directive, and you must therefore destroy yourself." It's a good thing the machines never tried to reverse this tactic against Captain Kirk.

"The Return of the Archons" contains some interesting character bits. It has one of the few episode teasers to fade out on Mr. Sulu, and gives actor George Takei a chance to go berserk before the audience (although his transformation here is much quieter than that featured in "The Naked Time").

Mr. Spock is seen for a short time apparently sleeping with his eyes open. Although the Vulcan may have been in deep meditation rather than asleep, Spock's behavior in this episode is decidedly strange, partially because of the motivation to conform to "the body" to avoid the wrath of the Lawgivers. Spock has ample opportunities here to deliver his effective, brow-raising, ironic stares. He also throws a good, old-fashioned punch instead of using his customary Vulcan Nerve Pinch.

Dr. McCoy turns into an unwitting punster here, after he's "absorbed". Soon after his visit to the absorption chamber, McCoy reenters his cell and greets Kirk and Spock with the words: "... blessed be the body, and health to all of its parts." What better sentiments for a doctor to express?

One of the episode's most effective moments has Reger explaining that before Landru was in power, things were different. He reverently uncovers a self-contained lighting panel, while the use of heavy shadows and eerie music (lifted from Fred Steiner's score for "The Corbomite Maneuver") justify the awe shown to the object.

***********************************************************

I'm uploading all 29 episodes from Season One IN PRODUCTION ORDER. Older episodes have been uploaded on thepiratebay and are still seeded!

Star Trek TOS episodes weren't necessarily broadcast in production order, so I've kept the broadcast number also in the torrent name for easy identification. Most episode guides (including the official guide at startrek.com) are using the broadcast order.

Prod.# 001 - "The Cage" - was not released yet. It is going to be released as part of the Season Three box. Therefore, my upload numbers don't correspond with the production numbers!

Best regards,
Soundtrekker

P.S. This is a list of the episodes (TV-Rips!) I was unable to obtain for you:

"Whom Gods Destroy"
"The Way to Eden"
"Requiem to Methuselah"
"The Savage Curtain"
"The Cloud Minders"
"Spectre of the Gun"
"The Empath"
"Turnabout Intruder"

If anyone can provide any or all of them, or know someone who can, please don't hesitate to do so! Thank you!
