Dit is het waargebeurde verhaal van een Schotse luitenant (Colin Firth) die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de Japanners in Singapore gevangen genomen werd. Hij werd naar een kamp in Thailand gestuurd waar hij werd onderworpen aan verschrikkelijke folteringen, en gedwongen werd om mee te bouwen aan de beruchte brug over de rivier de Kwai. Jaren later lijdt hij nog steeds aan posttraumatische stressstoornis, tot zijn tweede vrouw, Patricia Wallace (Nicole Kidman), hem helpt zijn verleden achter zich te laten door zijn voormalige gevangennemer te schrijven.
A former British Army officer, who was tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labor camp during World War II, discovers that the man responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him.
