Torrent description

STAR Cinema’s latest offering “In My Life” has been highly anticipated not just because it heralds Governor Vilma Santos-Recto’s comeback on the big screen after seven long years, but also of the gay theme within the movie.

During their press conference held at the Studio 1 of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center, Governor Vilma however was quick to clarify that the theme of the movie is not centered on gays alone.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

“It’s about how you live your life as a son, as a woman, as a man, that you are able to survive as long as you know how to respect, love, and understand. That’s the true story of In My Life. It’s not just focused on the love between gays,” she said.

In fact, Director Olive Lamasan’s prime consideration in making the movie was how to make it first, different from most gay-themed films, and next a unique role for the Star for All Seasons to play.

“I have to show something new. It took three years for the script. I had a hard time thinking of what else to do. Malu (Santos, SVP and Managing Director for Star Cinea) went to Busan, Korea and we saw there a mother and gay son story. But that has already been done here. What else can we do?” Direk Olive said.

“There were lots of initial scripts. During brainstorming, we came up with the story of the mom, the journey of a woman and the friendship that blossomed between the mother and the gay son’s lover. That excited me,” she added.

The movie revolves around Shirley (Vilma Santos), a woman at the crossroads of her life, who accepts her son Mark’s (Luis Manzano) invitation to visit him in New York.

There, she meets Mark’s boyfriend Noel (John Lloyd Cruz), an illegal immigrant dealing with insecurities as he struggles to earn Shirley’s acceptance and his place in the Big Apple.

There is tension between mother and boyfriend, which will reach its peak when the successful and financially-stable son reveals that his days are numbered.

Governor Vilma also shared the same feeling of excitement upon learning about the role, a character which is entirely different from how she is in real life.

“I guess, first of all, my character here, physically, it’s my first time to do it. It’s my first time to have this kind of look in the movie. And then secondly, it’s my first time to have a character that is comedic but one that doesn’t really intend to make you laugh. Plus the fact that my character here is different from my real life because here, she feels like she’s not loved. She’s cold in sharing her love. She always things negatively, as if her family doesn’t love her, which is opposite of everything that is true in my life that’s why it’s very-very challenging for. If this passes [the taste of the audience] then that’s already heaven for me,” she said.

Putting Vilma in a comedic situation was one of Direk Oliver’s motivating factors because she knew for a fact that she cannot go into the slapstick route.

Along with writers Raymond Lee and Senedy Que, Direk Olive decided to make Vilma’s character into the antagonistic mom.

“That’s what inspired us – the idea of ‘dethroning’ the star. In this role, Ate Vi will be different. She will be obnoxious, she will be a snob. You will hate her but at the same time, she’s so endearing. You will see parts of your mother that you love and also parts of her that make you annoyed,” Direk Olive said.

On the other hand, John Lloyd and Luis play straight-acting gays.

“For me, as a director, it’s easier to portray the typical kinds of gays that we see. I think it’s more difficult for them to portray straight-acting gays. Coz here, we need softness. A little softness here but it has to be very-very subtle,” Direk Olive said.

Raymond Lee explained that John Lloyd and Governor Vilma’s roles have been tailor-made for them from the start. Casting for the role of the son came afterwards.

Direk Olive saw in Luis the sensitivity and vulnerability that she needed from someone who would play the role of Mark. But she got the shock of her life when Luis flatly declined the role at first.

“I just wanted the offer to be higher,” Luis joked. “Of course, at first, when it was presented to me, it wasn’t that I had no trust in Direk Olive. It’s different when it’s explained to you and when you have a hard copy. It’s not everyday that they will throw a role to you, which at the same time, is a gay role.”

“I knew there had to be some intimacy between John Lloyd and I. It’s a shocker. But after reading the script and understanding the character, that there are those kinds of scenes and it’s definitely needed in the story to make it believable because we know that the audience is intelligent, I was able to appreciate the story more. For me, it was a yes or a yes,” he added.

Amidst the hesitance at the start, Direk Olive said Luis was a “revelation.”

She also said that working with Ate Vi “is definitely an awe” and with John Lloyd, one “doesn’t see John Lloyd playing the character but the character in John Lloyd.”

In My Life will be shown in cinemas nationwide on September 16, 2009. (Angela Casauay/Sunnex)
