Mike Reese (Duryea) is an ambitious newspaper crime reporter. When a story of his leads to a gang killing, he is blacklisted by the city newspapers, but manages to get a job on a local newspaper in a small town where a sensational murder case is just developing. A black female servant has been arrested for murder in the home of newspaper magnate E J Stanton (Marshall). Reese allies himself with the accused, more out of cynical careerism than a desire for justice.
This is a sharp and overlooked crime story, with terrific performances from all the cast.
